Social Media in Hiring and Employment

Social media is everywhere these days, even in HR and employment law!  Some employers use social media in making hiring decisions, and some are interested in doing so.  We will discuss the legal issues involved with using social media when hiring employees.  In addition, many employers use social media in employment decisions, including discipline, promotion, and FMLA abuse.  We will discuss what employers may and may not do, legally, in accessing and using social media in managing their employees.

Speaker - Franchesca Lata, Esq. Staff Attorney - MSEC

Franchesca Lata received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego.  She received her law degree from the University of Colorado. After graduating law school, Franchesca represented plaintiffs in employment-law actions including wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, unpaid wages, FMLA, and contract disputes.  In 2015, she joined Mountain States Employers Council, which is a not-for-profit employer’s association that provides assistance to employers in the areas of human resources, labor and employment law, compensation and benefit data, and related training.  Franchesca regularly counsels employers in all areas of employment law compliance and has advocated on their behalf before a variety of state and federal agencies.  Franchesca has taught classes on many employment law topics, and given presentations on Marijuana in the Workplace and Legal & Legislative Updates.  Franchesca works in MSEC’s Northern Regional Office and is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Wyoming.  She also serves as a Legislative Chair for the Northern Colorado Human Resource Association.

Lunch will be a taco bar - including your choice of chicken or beef, as well as a vegetarian option.  Sides include guacamole, sour cream, salsa, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and hard and soft tortilla shells.  Please let us know of any dietary restrictions, and we will try to accommodate.
